Benefits of mulching:
•Controls weeds
•Who likes weeding? Not me! Adding a thick base (3-4 inches) around your plants, shrubs and trees will deter weeds from growing.
•Helps maintain soil moisture
•That means less watering during the hot summer which in turn means water conservation!
•Mulch keeps plants cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It’s like putting a blanket around your plants roots.
•Without mulch, the bare soil takes a hit from sunlight, creating a hot, dry root environment.
•Prevents erosion.
•Mulch protects the soils top layer from hard rains and wind. (It also protects the plants from the weed wacker!)
•Curb appeal
•Last but not least, it looks great! Mulch provides a “finished” look to your yard.
Why use compost when seeding or reseeding your lawn?
•Spring and Fall
are both ideal times for seeding to rejuvenate an existing lawn or start a new one
•The use of compost can enrich and improve the physical structure of the soil itself
•For clay-like soiled lawns (welcome to NC soil!) working compost into the soil can help reduce the density of the soil, allowing it to accept and use water
•For sandy lawns, the addition of compost can deter erosion by adhering within the soil, reducing the risk of moving in heavy winds and rain
•By adding compost, watering can be less frequent because compost has its own hydrating properties when its applied to the soil in your lawn or garden
